Agency Information
Our mission is to provide a comprehensive emergency management system which coordinates people and resources to protect the lives, property and environment of Harrison County, Kentucky, using an all hazards approach through mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery from disasters and emergencies.
We are part of a statewide comprehensive emergency management program for the Commonwealth, and through it an integrated emergency management system, to provide for adequate assessment, mitigation, preparation , response and recovery from the threats to public safety and the effects of destruction resulting from all major hazards. Some of these hazards include tornados, blizzard, ice storms, snow storms, flooding, earthquakes, hazardous materials, etc.. or disaster or emergency occurrences that threaten life, property or the environment. We are a coordinating agency for disaster and emergency response for an emergency, declared emergency, disaster or catastrophe.
When a disaster occurs, the Emergency Operations Center (E.O.C.) is activated. During this time we make continual updates to the community on the status of road closings and conditions. We become a public information center for the public and the media. We become a liaison with the National Guard & State. We assist response units. Get appropriate transportation for the community, such as doctors/nurses to hospitals and nursing homes, dialysis patients to their appointments, groceries to the shut ins and many other ways of helping.
After a disaster our agency works closely with FEMA with damage assessment, help gather dollar damage to the city and county. Sometimes it takes years to complete a disaster incident after it has occurred. We work closely with the Red Cross, and other volunteer agencies, during and after a disaster.
